    Miné Hair Guide

Hair Types & Textures: A Complete Guide from 3A to 4C

Understanding your natural texture is the first step to healthier hair — and to choosing a raw hair wig or extension that blends invisibly. This guide walks through every curl and coil type from 3A through 4C, with care routines and the Miné Hair textures that match each one.

    The Curl Typing System

Popularised by celebrity stylist Andre Walker, the modern typing system classifies hair from Type 1 (straight) through Type 4 (coily), with A, B and C sub-categories describing the width and tightness of the pattern. Types 3 and 4 cover the natural curl and coil textures most Miné Hair clients are matching.

Most heads carry two or three types — often looser at the crown, tighter at the nape. Identifying the dominant pattern is what matters when choosing a wig texture.

    Type 3A — Loose Curls

Pattern. Large, loose, springy curls with a well-defined S-shape, typically the diameter of a piece of sidewalk chalk. Shiny and prone to frizz in humidity.

Care routine. Lightweight leave-ins, curl creams and satin pillowcases. Avoid heavy butters that flatten the pattern.

Raw hair match. Our Body Wave and Deep Wave raw Vietnamese textures blend seamlessly with 3A hair, adding fullness while preserving movement.

    Type 3B — Springy Curls

Pattern. Tighter, more voluminous curls ranging from bouncy ringlets to spiral corkscrews, roughly the circumference of a permanent marker.

Care routine. Deep condition weekly. Layer a moisturising leave-in with a curl gel to lock in definition. Refresh with water and oil.

Raw hair match. Choose our Deep Wave or Curly raw textures for the closest visual and tactile match to 3B natural hair.

    Type 3C — Tight Curls

Pattern. Densely packed corkscrew curls the width of a pencil or straw. Voluminous, high shrinkage, and easily dehydrated.

Care routine. The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) locks in hydration. Detangle in sections with slip-heavy conditioner and fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

Raw hair match. Our Curly raw Vietnamese hair mimics 3C texture and takes color and heat gracefully without losing pattern integrity.

    Type 4A — Coily

Pattern. Tight, springy S-pattern coils the size of a crochet needle. Defined pattern, moderate shrinkage, and a soft, cottony feel.

Care routine. Prioritise moisture retention with steam treatments and creamy leave-ins. Protective styles with satin-lined caps preserve length.

Raw hair match. Our Kinky Curly raw texture is designed to blend with 4A hair — same coil size, same drink of moisture.

    Type 4B — Zigzag Coils

Pattern. Tightly coiled Z-pattern strands with sharp angles rather than curls. High shrinkage (up to 70%) and a fluffy, cotton-like density.

Care routine. Pre-poo before wash day, cleanse with sulphate-free shampoo, and seal with a heavy butter such as raw shea. Finger-detangle only.

Raw hair match. Our Kinky Straight and Coily raw textures deliver realistic 4B blending — perfect for protective wigs that look like your own hair.

    Type 4C — Densely Coiled

Pattern. The tightest natural texture, with very little visible curl definition, maximum volume and up to 75% shrinkage. Fragile at the strand level.

Care routine. Water is your best friend — mist daily, seal with oil, and always sleep in a satin bonnet. Low-manipulation styling protects the strand.

Raw hair match. Our Coily raw Vietnamese hair is the closest visual and textural match to 4C, ideal for full lace wigs that read as natural hair.

    Why Raw Hair Behaves Differently

Unlike processed "remy" hair, raw Vietnamese hair has never been stripped, steam-processed or dyed. The cuticle stays intact and aligned in one direction, which means it responds to water, humidity and heat the way your natural hair does. That is why a raw curly bundle keeps its pattern wash after wash, and why raw straight hair takes a silk press cleanly.

For 4A–4C naturals, this matters most: processed hair often reverts unevenly and sheds when co-washed. Raw textures behave like your own strands — which is why they blend without a visible line at the leave-out.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify my hair type?

Wash your hair, apply no product, and let it air dry. Compare the resulting pattern to the 3A–4C reference above. Most people have two or three types across the head.

Does raw Vietnamese hair work with 4C texture?

Yes. Miné Hair sources raw hair in a range of textures — including Kinky Straight and Coily — that blend with 4A through 4C natural hair without chemical processing.

How often should I wash a raw hair wig?

Every 7–14 days depending on wear. Use a sulphate-free shampoo and a moisturising conditioner, then air-dry on a wig stand to protect the cap.

Can I color or heat-style raw hair?

Because raw hair has an intact cuticle, it takes color and heat far better than processed hair. We still recommend a professional colorist and heat protectant below 180°C.
